About Feast of El-Nayrouz (Coptic New Year)
The first day of the Coptic year, 1 Thout. The Church counts its years from AD 284, the beginning of the reign of Diocletian, under whom persecution was fiercest; so the Coptic calendar is called the Calendar of the Martyrs, and Nayrouz is kept as their feast. A custom of the day is eating red dates: their colour recalls the blood of the martyrs, and their white heart the purity of their faith.
